Last month, as I was reviewing the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries for 2013,1 noted that 574 of the 4,405 occupational fatalities-or 13%-were due to falls to a lower level. Most of those falls were related to construction activities. As most of us are also aware, fall protection typically resides near the top of OSHA's annual list of most frequently cited violations. The trends are similar worldwide. For example, in Australia, 12% of work-related fatalities from 2009 to 2013 were caused by falls to another level. In Qatar, where migrant workers are building stadiums for the 2022 World Cup, the toll of falls continues to grow. Reports indicate that at least 35 workers from Nepal, India and Bangladesh have died since 2012 due to construction-related falls.
