As most agencies wrap up their on-site investigations of the April 17 ammonium nitrate fertilizer explosion in West, TX, CSB plans to continue its own investigation. CSB is gathering evidence and conducting interviews to get a better understanding of the explosion that claimed 14 lives, injured hundreds, and caused widespread damage and destruction in the community. The investigation will focus on issues such as the safe handling and storage of ammonium nitrate; planning and zoning practices for high-hazard facilities; emergency response techniques; and the adequacy and effectiveness of national standards, industry practices and regulations for the safe storage and handling of ammonium nitrate, says CSB Western Regional Office Director Don Holmstrom.
