UL Warns About TV, Large Furniture Tip-Over Dangers

U.S. hospital emergency departments treated an estimated annual average of 43,400 people for injuries related to instability of televisions, furniture and appliances from 2008 through 2010, according to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Of that average and the 293 fatalities reported between 2000 and 2010, staff note that 58% involved children under age 18. "This is not as uncommon as people might think, sadly," says UL's John Drengenberg. In light of these fatalities, UL reminds families and caregiv-ers how to properly safeguard homes against such hazards.
