A study published in the February 2012 issue of Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene recommends that companies provide their own rescue services for confined space emergencies, in addition to depending on fire departments for support. The study, "Confined Space Emergency Response: Assessing Employer and Fire Department Practices" shows that outside rescue teams could take up to 40 minutes after receiving a 9-1-1 call to enter the confined space where the emergency is located. The study based this realization on response times, on-scene assessments, preparation times and the time it takes a company to realize that an emergency is taking place. As stated in Occupational Safety and Health Reporter, "In addition to the fire department's response time, there is the time it takes company workers to realize an emergency is taking place and call for help."
