In reference to David Fender's article, "Electric Vehicle Noise: Are [They Too Quiet?" (PS, Jan. 2011, pp. 34-38): When determining an induced sound for electric vehicles, the criteria is not "what subjects prefer," rather it is "what is effective in eliciting an appropriate protective reaction." My fear is that a practical but lazy engineer will apply a simple electronic beep noise instead of one that more closely resembles a traditional low rumble sound. Not only are we (conditioned to respond with wariness to these vehicle-produced lower frequency sounds, but biologically we also associate these with tornados, earthquakes, thunder, landslides and stampedes.
