When I was asked to review Daniel Pink's new book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, the thought was that I knew a lot about motivation, since I had just served on ASSE's COMRA task force on volunteerism and motivating volunteers, and taught behavior-based safety for the Navy. I thought I knew a lot, too, until I read Pink's book. Drive added considerably to my understanding of both the scientific theory as well as the practice of motivation. It also opened my eyes to greater insight into my own motivations and of those around me.
