Terrorist attacks, hurricanes and pandemic risks top the list of mega disasters of the past decade, according to a report by property and casualty insurer Zurich. Selected based on overall business impact, the top 10 mega disasters, in chronological order, are: Sept. 11 terrorist attacks (2001); SARS (2003); U.S./ Canada power outage (2003); Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami (2004); Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma (2005); Financial crisis (2008); China earthquake (2008); H1N1 pandemic (2009); Iceland volcano (2010); Floods in Europe and Pakistan (2010). In an effort to help risk managers strengthen their business risk prevention plans to prepare for future crises, Zurich risk prevention specialists presented 10 lessons learned from these mega disasters at REBEX 2010 Regional Risk Management Conference. Zurich's Vic Gordon and Ashutosh Riswadkar presented the lessons learned in three categories: macro changes; best practices; and decision making.
