摘要

Set. Standing alone it is nothing but a collection of three abstract symbols that in combination make a fourth, which is meaningless by itself. Words before and after create context that makes set meaningful. The Oxford English Dictionary 1989 edition volume XV, reprinted with corrections in 2000, gives set 25 pages to explain, illuminate, describe, narrow, expand and begin to define what set can mean. All that information does not tell what set actually means; it only tells what set has meant in the past. The words around set establish its momentary definition. The Miranda warnings for an in-custody suspect arrested for a crime are remarkably familiar. They are so familiar that they have become their own caricature. No state or territory has granted me a license to practice law.
