In 1980, bureau of labor statistics (bls, 1980) released a special report on eye injuries among high-risk workers. In this study, approximately 40% of injured workers were wearing some form of eye protection, but in many cases an object or substance went around or under the protection being worn. This study had a significant influence on the development of ANSI Z87.1-1989, American National Standard Practice for Occupational and Educational Personal Eye and Face Protection Devices.
