I recently attended the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering's (CSSE) professional development conference in Quebec City, Quebec. While listening to various reports and presentations during the meeting, I noted many similarities between ASSE and CSSE. Eldeen Pozniak, completing her term as CSSE president, reported that the conference had a record attendance and that CSSE membership continues to grow. ASSE has achieved similar records and sustained growth in recent years. During a reception for CSSE's first practice group (similar to ASSE's practice specialties), CSSE Executive Director Wayne Glover reported that this would be the start of potentially more practice groups. ASSE recently announced its 14th practice specialty (Fire Protection) and as a Society we continue to look for ways to meet the needs of practitioners in specific areas of practice. Incoming CSSE President Art Nordholm said he would be polling members for their opinions on the future direction of CSSE. ASSE always welcomes feedback from members on its direction and activities.
