摘要

For the first time in the U.S., a national consensus standard for a safety and health management system—applicable to organizations of all sizes and types—has been issued. On July 25, 2005, ANSI approved ANSI/AIHA Z10-2005, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. This is a major development. The standard provides senior managements with a well-conceived, state-of-the-art concept and action outline to improve safety and health management systems. However, few organizations have management systems in place that meet all of the standard's provisions. As employers make improvements in their safety and health management systems to meet the standard's provisions, the frequency and severity of occupational injuries and illnesses will likely be reduced. The societal implications of this standard are substantial. A few of those implications are addressed in this article.
