摘要

So far in 2006, two significant safety and health measures have been passed, both in response to tragic losses of life in American workplaces that were significant for the number of workers killed. The most obvious is the mine safety legislation—the MINER Act—passed by Congress in what seems like record time, especially given how few bills or even significant regulations seem to make headway in occupational safety and health these days. It came following the loss of 12 lives last January at the Sago mine in West Virginia and the ongoing dramatic coverage by the media. The bill was introduced May 16 and signed by President Bush on June 15.
