A recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study shows that the economic impact of motor vehicle crashes has surpassed $230.6 billion. According to NHTSA, 41,821 persons were killed, 5.3 million were injured and 27.6 mil-lion vehicles were damaged in 2000. As these statistics show, too many lives and too much money are being lost in this country due to motor vehicle accidents. Well aware of this problem, the transportation industry has long been searching for standards that would address the safety of motor vehicle fleets. In winter 1999, ASSE staff began to formulate plans to assemble a committee with a primary focus on motor vehicle fleet safety. In summer 2000, the Society's Transportation Practice Specialty formally recommended that a motor vehicle fleet operations safety standard be drafted under ANSI procedure. ASSE agreed and began moving forward on the proposal.
