摘要

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed more than 3,000 lives in 2017. The organization defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving such as talking or texting on a phone, eating, drinking, talking to people in the vehicle, and using an entertainment or navigation system. While distracted driving is a risk to those inside the vehicle, it is also a risk to those who may not be driving, such as highway workers and first responders.Distracted driving has become a hazard to many highway workers. According to American Road and Transportation Builders Association, 799 fatalities were recorded in work zones in 2017, of which 132 were suffered by highway workers. A study from University of Missouri found that distracted drivers are 29 times more likely to be involved in a highway work zone incident or near-hit. Based on data from more than 3,000 people who drove more than 50 million miles collectively between 2006 and 2015, results show that drivers who spent any length of time distracted behind the wheel had an increased risk of a collision or near collision in a work zone. Researchers suggest that state transportation agencies and Federal Highway Administration work on behavioral countermeasures such as better public education, laws banning texting and driving, and policies that may deter driver distractions.
