摘要

Why does this happen and what can be done to reduce this problem? Many factors contribute to distracted driving, or when a driver is handling a vehicle without his/her full attention. Obvious factors include texting or talking on the phone while driving. Less obvious factors include driving while tired, talking to other passengers or eating while driving. In the U.S., infrastructure defenses against distracted driving include rumble strips, text stops and law-enforcement patrols. Text stops, where a driver can safely pull off the road to read or respond to a phone call or text message, are a fairly recent installation in many states. Usually, text stops are existing rest areas. The use of countermeasures for distracted driving varies widely among the states. According to a 2017 report, only rumble strips were used consistently by all states (Peters & Stavrinos, 2017). A rumble strip is a grooved section of pavement that shakes a vehicle and creates tire noise when a vehicle drifts outside of the driving lane. The goal is to redirect the driver's concentration.
