摘要

Highest level leaders in safety and elsewhere don't rest on their laurels. Nor do they resort to playing "prevent defense." Have you ever seen a football game in which the leading team plays to not lose rather than to win? Where they play it so safe (to run out the clock) that rather than holding on for the win, they wind up panicking and then losing? Remember that there is no play clock in organizations, that holding on to previous gains often leads to losing sterling achievements and credibility. Change always entails losing something that we're used to. But there's a balance. As Strikwerda (2014) wrote, "Disruption is a side effect of innovation, not a goal."I encourage you to aim toward ever-high levels of safety performance and culture. This always means embedding taking (reasonable) risks into your safety leadership planning, decisions and actions.
