It was encouraging to receive feedback and insight from Brett Charlton. I would like to preface the discussion and state that the concepts Charlton pres- ents in his disagreements add perspective and value to the underlying concept of the article. Expanding on Charlton's conversation, coaching or training employees to identify and mitigate risk is also a fundamental role of a safety professional. Systems or procedures should be in place or established so that employees can immediately address their issues even if the last resort is to "call the safety guy." This is a great opportunity to reinforce risk mitigation techniques and coach them up even further. These types of interactions for new safety professionals are essential for developing trust and it gets both parties involved in the solution.
