California Law Reclassifies Some Gig Workers as Employees

According to Los Angeles Times, California state audits found that nearly 500,000 workers were incorrectly classified as independent contractors. To remedy the misclassification of workers, a California bill was signed into law, affecting at least one million workers by reclassifying them as employees as opposed to independent contractors. According to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who signed Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) into law, AB5 "will help reduce worker misclassification-workers being wrongly classified as 'independent contractors' rather than employees, which erodes basic worker protections like the minimum wage, paid sick days and health insurance benefits." By reclassifying these workers, they are now guaranteed workplace safety and health rights such as paid sick leave, minimum wage, workers'compensation benefits and unemployment benefits.
