PSJ: In terms of the design of the fall protection system, what is important for safety professionals to keep in mind? Thorn: We often think about the visible aspects of a fall protection system, the PPE. Years ago, people would often ask, "Do our workers have their harness on and are they tied off?" We've moved beyond that, in many situations, and we now know that we must ask other questions. First, should we even be using PPE? While PPE is a very visible aspect of the industry, the hierarchy of controls, which is fundamental for safety professionals, tells us that it is not the safest way to protect our employees. In many cases, we'll be safer by using less PPE. I don't mean that we're sending people out there unprotected, I'm just saying that we're using more engineering controls.
