I was recently asked by Safeguard, a New Zealand publication, to share the U.S. perspective on key challenges facing the OSH profession. I'd like to share those thoughts with you as well. Looking first at regulatory concerns, the issue of scale affects our efforts to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses. Census data from 2010 indicate that 27.9 million small businesses and 18,500 larger businesses with more than 500 employees operate in the U.S. Considered strictly from a compliance inspection standpoint, that is a lot of ground to cover, especially since there are only about 2,000 state and federal safety and health compliance officers.
