In 2015, OSHA issued "Adding Inequality to Injury: The Costs of Failing to Protect Workers on the Job," a report that shows how injured workers, their families and private insurers bear most of the costs of workplace injury and illness. A study published recently in Occupational and Environmental Medicine provides further evidence of that trend. The authors report that "construction floor layers showed rates of personal health claims for chronic musculoskeletal disorders that were nearly double the rates for a general population of workers." Ultimately, the shift of claims to personal health insurance also shifts focus and resources to managing disease rather than to preventing the work-related causes of those ailments.
