The top three technology items on the RailAmerica and Florida East Coast wish list are outlined as follows - and, in some cases, are most effective when combined on a locomotive. Our experience with these technologies proves to have a very rapid return on investment and supports improved control of our assets. 1. Wi-Tronix onboard computer technology with GPS tracking provides real-time connectivity with a centralized database. Centralized data supports consistent analysis and an ability to direct corrective action. Information gathering from onboard sensors such as fuel level and event recorder inputs are just a few that provide information of value. Reports can be produced daily or alerts sent to appropriate managers identifying poor performing locomotives and events, such as exceeding speed orders or improper train-handling behavior. Any train-handling event that a locomotive manager looks for in an event recorder download can be programmed by system to alert when it occurs.
