Technology is supplementing the light bulb in a variety of rail applications. Witness the light-emitting diode (LED) evolution. LEDs are gaining acceptance among railroads for use with grade-crossing warning devices, and they're beginning to surface in wayside signals. LEDs also are being used with end-of-train devices. Why LED? For starters, LEDs have a much longer service life (20-years plus) than standard bulbs (about three years). LEDs also provide a wider beam and, proponents say, are easier for railroad engineers to see.
