John Paul Getty once mused that "without the element of uncertainty, the bringing off of even the greatest business triumph would be dull, routine, and eminently unsatisfying." That may be true, but odds are that any project manager who has seen one too many well-planned projects spiral out of control when the unexpected happens might find a little less uncertainty and a little more dull and routine eminently more satisfying. The trouble is, though, uncertainty is something project managers face all the time. But uncertainty can be tamed, and in Managing Project Uncertainty, author David Cleden presents an assortment of defensive strategies that can improve a project's ability to deal with it.
