A range of professional, political, and societal factors are explored in terms of their destructive impact on the various traditions of psychotherapy. It is argued that a homogenised and reduced discourse has resulted, paradoxically, from ostensible efforts to improve access to psychological therapies and promote evidence-based practice. Certain trends and individuals within the profession of clinical psychology have played significant roles in these developments. The widespread, and often unquestioned, implicit influence of an inappropriate medical model is explored. Illusions of psychological utopias, along with narcissistic attachments to idealised theories and unfounded certainties, have often obstructed genuine exploration and enquiry into the nature of human dysfunction and its alleviation.
