This book provides a valuable compendium of arguments covering the major policy debates on wellbeing within and between Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. These debates have taken place over the past 50 years or so and focus on the elusive task of defining and measuring economic wellbeing. The materials consist of a number of papers, including key papers originated by Ian Castle, the former secretary of the Australian Department of Finance. These are presented alongside other research papers published by a number of contributors mostly Australians. This not inconsiderable task has been skilfully addressed by the co-editors, Andrew Podger and Dennis Trewin. Both are former officials of the Australian Government. The large volume of papers-28 in total-cover four interconnected topics: defining and promoting wellbeing and the role of economics in that task, the challenges of measuring wellbeing, the challenges of defining and measuring inequality and the particular dilemmas posed by the climate change and the limits of growth. Two principal issues arise in making an assessment of the value of the debate explored in the Compendium. The first issue is where to start in assessing the underlying debate in relation to the topics selected for debate. The second is what is included and what is not in the conduct of the debate. These matters are interlinked and merit comment.
