The Handbook of Industrial Organization, Vol. 3, edited by Mark Armstrong and Robert H. Porter contains 10 chapters which cover a wide range of theoretical topics in industrial organization, like the theory of regulation, auctions, price discrimination and competition and anti-trust policies. It begins with Chap. 27, in which Mark Armstrong and David E.M. Sappington analyze 'Recent Developments in the Theory of Regulation'. They start with optimal monopoly regulation, and then come to practical regulatory policies for optimal regulation with multiple firms and vertical relationships. This chapter provides a coherent review of the recent theoretical work on the design of regulatory policy, focusing on the complications that arise when suppliers have better information about the regulated industry than do regulators.
