Nordic mobile markets: leading the way?

Wireless telephony has become central to the modern cultural identity of the Nordic countries. Many of the images projected from Denmark, Finland, Norway and I Sweden in recent years have moved away from hackneyed Viking imagery and the cuisine of salted fish in favour of pictures showing people with mobile phones, clamped to their ear, deep in conversation. Such pictures may originate from the marketing departments of the mobile phone manufacturers Ericsson and Nokia, but they are also familiar to anyone who has walked down a street in Stockholm or Helsinki, Oslo or Copenhagen. Quite simply, using mobile phones was a way of life for most people in the Nordic countries before the rest of Europe even knew of the technology's existence. However, recent developments in both European and Nordic mobile threaten to jeopardise the role of the Nordic region as mobile telephony innovator for the first time―a situation that stands to change the character of Nordic mobile forever.
