The point is often made that old-style national I telcos have emerged ahead of their newer I rivals in the aftermath of the sector's implosion; to the extent that survival in any form tends to be regarded as a nearly unqualified success, this is true. Yet it would be wrong to assume that the traditional telcos have pulled off this feat without paying a price. The most obvious, of course, is the financial hammering and bleeding balance sheets suffered along the way. But a more subtle―and, for the future, perhaps more significant―price has been levied at the very top of the carriers concerned. The last two years have seen the departure of chief executives at every one of Europe's largest telcos: Telefonica, British Telecom, Telecom Italia, Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom. At the end of last year, the head of Vodafone, Europe's (and the world's) largest mobile operator, joined the list―although in the case of Sir Christopher Gent, the decision was a voluntary one. In the other cases, the circumstances surrounding such high-level 'regime change' were varied, ranging from shareholder pressure (Sir Peter Bonfeld at BT) and government pressure (Telefonica's Juan Villalonga) to hostile takeover (Roberto Colaninno at TI). In the case of Michel Bon (at FT) and Dr Ron Sommer (DT), it could be argued that the pair had actually dug each other's professional graves by rupturing the alliance which had acted as a plank for their global strategies in the 1990s.
