As the 2004 accession of the EU candidate states draws nearer, discussion continues to rage about how enlargement will affect Europe's economy in sectors such as telecomms. Who will be the benefactors and beneficiaries in the new Europe? The next era in European politics is due to begin in May 2004 when ten new Member States are scheduled to join the European Union. The accession of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, I Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia represents a huge political and economic shift in Europe. With Bulgaria and Romania scheduled to join two years later, and talks with Turkey planned for 2004, the political face of Europe will change permanently.
