It was not so long ago that traditional telco structures were pronounced more or less dead. While the dot.coms were busy inventing new paradigms (yuk!) with each waking hour, the telcos were portrayed as stolid and reactionary. Their attempts to survive and prosper in a competitive era while saddled with the old monopoly mentality looked tired and uninspired. How different from the shooting stars of the new economy who wrote in huge letters across the darkening sky: 'change or die'. Among those who bought this argument were... ahem... the traditional telcos, who promptly set about dismantling their integrated organisations and rebranding or debranding their various business units and, in some cases, selling them off as separate entities. At the time, it seemed like the fashionable thing to do. Now, it looks just so last year, darling...
