Growth has continued to characterise the European GSM market in 2001―despite a marked slowdown as saturation levels loom in some markets and others suffer from a sales slump. Although the arrival of several new operators has helped to break monopolies and raise penetration levels, it is the pan-European mobile giants that seem likely to have the greatest impact on the future of Europe's mobile landscape... Dhe GSM standard continues to play the leading role on the global cellular stage. In relation to users of other mobile standards, GSM has an estimated 646.5m subscribers within a global cellular subscriber total of 955.5m (see Figure 1). According to the GSM Association―in figures from the EMC 'World Cellular Database'―GSM represents 71% of the world's digital market, and 67% of the world's wireless telephony market. At the end of 2001, more than half of the total number of global GSM users were European, with an estimated 354.3m subscribers, compared with 226.1m subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region.
