As we contemplate the bountiful landscape of the world's third largest economy, it is sad to see that it remains blighted by one of its principal landlords. As Deutsche Telekom is dragged kicking and screaming into the real world, the patience of those around it is being pushed to new limits... Winding our way through the land of make-believe, it seems strange that, in spite of the efforts of the European Commission and Germany's regulatory and competition authorities―and the vociferous protests of alternative carriers―the country's incumbent operator, Deutsche Telekom (DT) still manages to frustrate the goal of full and unhindered competition in the local loop. More than four years after liberalisation, DT remains to this day in an antechamber of unfulfilled promise and potential, while an old German favourite (and TV classic) Dinner for One is served in the banqueting hall next door. Its catch-phrase―"same procedure as every year"―is apt. On the menu: turtle soup and venison, with a gold spoon. Unfortunately, this is not so much the stuff of 19th century literature as the sad, present-day reality of one of Europe's most important companies and largest telecomms markets.
