One of the most important factors that will encourage people to use public transport instead of cars is the availability of public transport. This affects not only the travel time but also the sacrifice that the choice of transport mode involves at both end of the journey. One needs to take into account the availability of public transport compared with the availability of private car transport. Consequently, to achieve a higher use of public transport, the availability of public transport must be at least as good as that of the car, and in large conurbations preferably even better.
