Until fairly recently, the functional focus of public transport bus terminals was to operate the buses themselves and to make the drivers comfortable. The terminal was an efficient, rational centre for bus management. Most terminals were clean and symmetrical, but to passengers, bus terminals often appeared sterile, desolate and unsystematic - floors with neither walls nor ceilings. It had not yet become clear that a bus terminal was a public space like many other city spaces. Thus bus terminals seldom provided the passengers with any sense of excitement. They were mechanical places, in which human beings were not regarded as an important feature.
