摘要

Dynamic and culturally diverse, Toronto, perched on the northwest shore of Lake Ontario, has enjoyed decades of sustained economic growth and prosperity. It draws an estimated 22 million visitors a year to tour such sights as Skydome, Casa Loma, Ontario Place and the CN Tower, and participate in an amazing variety of dining experiences: Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Middle Eastern, French and German. While an estimated 2.4 million people live in the central core, another 2.2 million people reside in the suburbs immediately surrounding the city. This entire region, referred to as the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), has experienced rapid growth that places increasing demands on existing services, demands that are clearly evident in transportation. With an estimated 2.5 million vehicles registered in the GTA, highways and roads alone cannot accommodate the daily transportation needs of this community. A strong public transit system is essential.
