The city of Stuttgart, which is situated amid woodland and vineyards, is the parliamentary and governmental seat of the federal state of Baden- Wuerttemberg. Its surface area of 200 km~2 is home to 560,000 people. At present, there are overall 370,000 jobs within the city limits. 200,000 of these are condensed into a narrow basin that surrounds the actual centre and is also home to half of Stuttgart's residents. The city, which is one of Europe's economic powerhouses, is also at the centre of the "Stuttgart Region", with some 3 million inhabitants. Heavy commuter flows between the city and surrounding areas, and the difficult local topography, with variations in level of up to 300 metres inside the built-up area, place particular demands on the city's transport systems.
