The huge scale of PT's bus and rail transport services is illustrated by the following statistics: VDV operators carry an annual 8.5 billion passengers; of these, 1.2 billion use the passenger rail services run by the privatised state railway (DB AG), while 7.3 billion passengers travel by bus, light rail, tramway or metro. VDV's membership covers nearly 90% of the PT market; in total, 9.7 billion passengers use public transit in Germany. By way of comparison, annual domestic air traffic stands at 15 million passengers, while 150 million annually use DB AG's longdistance rail services.
