On 28 June 1997 the third Metro in China was opened. Following Beijing and Shanghai, one of the most advanced Metro systems in the world has started initial stage trial operations in Guangzhou (Canton). The new Metro is expected to be fully operational in July 1999. This challenging project, which uses advanced management methods, is on time and in accordance with established objectives. Trains and major E&M systems installed in stations and tunnels are financed by the German Government and manufactured and supplied by a consortium lead by. Siemens AG and ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation (Adtranz).
