On 17 October 1919 HM King Alfonso XIII officially inaugurated the first stretch of the Madrid Metro covering the Sol - Cuatro Caminos section of Line 1, comprised of 3.5 km of track and eight stations. The Compania Metropolitano Alfonso XIII as it was then called, was set up as a Joint-Stock Trading Company and continued in this form until 1978, when it was placed in administration by the State which declared a need to acquire the shares of the Company by forced expropriation in order to transfer them to the Madrid City Council and Provincial Council (now the Community of Madrid) with holdings of 75% and 25% respectively. In 1986 the administration order ceased and State assets allocated to operating the service were transferred to the Community of Madrid. On the same date the Metro shares were handed over to the Community of Madrid and to its City Council.
