This new textbook serves as a timely review of the existing North American literature on science learning outside the classroom, and as a call to arms. Commissioned by the Committee on Learning Science in Informal Environments of the National Research Council of the National Academies as a sister and extension to the Council's 2007 report on science education in schools up to Grade 8 (roughly Year 9 in the UK system), this was an ambitious project, but its chief finding is that we know very little about learning science outside of schools.
