Paper mills represented by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) consumed a total of 48.26 million t of recovered paper (RCP) last year, 1.4% more than they did in 2016. Making up 46.4% of the input material for paper production, recovered paper is the leading raw material used by Europe's paper industry, ahead of pulp at 40.1%, according to annual statistics published by the industry association. All told, Europe's paper industry experienced another 1.5% growth in output, which brought the figure to 92.17 million t last year. Closer consideration shows, however, that there have been substantial differences in the trends for the various grades and categories of grades. Newsprint was hard hit once again with a 7.8% drop in production to 6.04 million t. Other types of graphic paper suffered a minor slump of 1% with output of 27.29 million t. On the other hand, packaging paper production climbed 4.2% to 47.28 million t.
