Norwegian sorting and sensor technologies company Tomra has introduced a laser object detection (LOD) system designed to identify black objects and glass, making it possible to improve the quality of recovered paper and certain non-ferrous scrap grades. According to a late February announcement, the new LOD system can pick out material which remains undetected by near infrared technology (NIR). The company is marketing the system, which is designed to be combined with its "autosort" NIR and "finder" separation processes, as a response to tougher purity requirements, such as those which are now being enforced by Chinese authorities. According to Tomra, glass, plastics and black plastics can be removed from recovered paper, while all of these hard-to-sort contaminants and black rubber can be removed from zorba and zurik products. The company claims the unit can raise final product purity by up to 4%.
