DS Smith has been granted development consent for a new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at its Kemsley paper mill in Kent. The CHP plant will comprise a gas turbine (52-57 MW), waste heat recovery boilers (105 MW steam) and a steam turbine (16 MW). The new CHP plant, which will power the paper production at the mill, is being developed in partnership with German energy provider E.ON and will replace the existing CHP plant at Kemsley, said DS Smith. It will be located on the south-eastern part of the site and is planned to be commissioned in mid-2021. DS Smith expects to see a 36,000 tpy carbon reduction from improved efficiency at the new facility. DS Smith's Kemsley mill has an annual capacity to produce approximately 800,000 t of paper made from recycled fibre. Its main products are containerboard grades and plasterboard liners.
