Problems re-starting PM 5 at the Frovi board mill in Sweden have proven to be more serious than previously thought, according to packaging paper and board producer Billerud Korsnas. The company said it was unable to stabilise production at the level it had hoped for in December. Despite a "step by step" improvement, there were still volume losses. "Extensive unpredictable technical disturbances" occurred during the re-start of the machine following the completion of rebuild measures in November. The upgrade was part of a longer-term capacity increase from 155,000 tpy to a total of 550,000 tpy of beverage carton-board. Currently, the potential output is around 450,000 tpy and normal daily production is 1,500 t. "It may be too early to claim that the problems are solved, but during the last few weeks we have seen that the machine is coming back on plan", said Per Lindberg, President and CEO of the paper and board group.
