The expansion of the Arauco mill owned by Chilean pulp producer Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion S.A. is one step closer to being realised. Chile's environment agency has approved the Moderni-zacion y Ampliacion Planta Arauco (MAPA) project, the company announced in early February. Arauco will thus be able to update and expand its pulp mill in the Bio Bio region in the country. The production facility, which currently has a total capacity of around 790,000 tpy of pulp, will add a new production line 3 with a capacity of 1.56 million t of softwood and hardwood pulp. Furthermore, Arauco plans to increase capacity on line 2 at the site from 500,000 tpy to 540,000 tpy of softwood pulp. In return, Arauco plans to close the smaller line 1, which was installed in the 1970s and, unlike the other lines, still operates with a batch digester. The expansion would raise the mill's production capacity by 1.3 million tpy to 2.1 million tpy. According to previous reports, the investment volume of the project is around $2.1 bn.
