The Italian paper market has seen things get really interesting again just in time for the start of the summer holidays. After weeks of negotiations, buyers and sellers agreed on higher prices for standard and improved newsprint towards the end of July. A few SC paper buyers have also had to dig deeper into their pockets since 1 July. Coated magazine paper producers did not have a successful outcome to price talks about deliveries in the second half or third quarter of the year. Fine paper manufacturers are suffering from weak demand and are trying to persuade their customers to make purchases by offering lucrative prices. Recycled containerboard manufacturers reportedly enjoyed brisk business in June and July and have used the current demand situation to announce a new round of price hikes for July and August. The first price increases materialised on the GD board market in July, although not all producers were on board with the latest round of talks. Coreboard prices have typically remained untouched over the past few months.
