The German market for corrugated case material can be described as a saturated market. Growth in saturated markets usually goes hand in hand with fierce competition and ousting competitors from the market. However, in discussions at this year's FachPack trade fair, paper and packaging companies explained that this process could also be understood as an optimisation process. In the year 2013, no other sentence was as often heard as the following: All paper used must be adapted to the specific uses of the respective packaging products. When a couple of years ago the corrugated case material market discovered kraftliner substitutes, this was more or less born from necessity. First, brown kraftliner paper was in scarce supply and expensive at that time, and second medium-sized paper mills had to find ways to hold their ground on the market in competition with huge paper capacities. Meanwhile the industry has made a virtue out of this necessity: in times when sustainability is one of the most urgent requirements, kraftliner substitutes are gaining increasing importance on the German market.
