In the course of the last decades, the People's Republic of China has notably increased its position in the global pulp and paper industry. With its accession to the World Trade Organisation in December 2001, China pledged to redesign domestic legislation and take part in the multilateral trading system as well as actively collaborate on a regional and international level and remove foreign trade barriers. Furthermore, by joining the WTO, China not only agreed to the implementation of the necessary liberalisation measurements and the adoption of international standards, but also to making its system more transparent.
