Engineering students rarely have an opportunity to delver into the historic antecedents of design in their craft, andr this is especially true for biomedical devices. The teachingr emphasis is always on the new, the innovative, andr the future. Even so, over the last decade, I have coupledr a research agenda with engineering special projects intor a successful format that allows young biomedical engineeringr students to understand aspects of their history and learn ther complexities of design. There is value in having knowledge ofr historic engineering achievements, not just for an appreciation ofr these accomplishments but also for understanding exactly howr engineers and clinicians of the day executed their feats—in otherr words, how the design process works. Ultimately, this particularr educational odyssey confirms that history and engineering educationr are not only compatible but mutually supportive.
